McCain applied to study architecture at Colorado Agricultural College in her hometown of Fort Collins, Colo. Despite her high marks, she was not initially accepted, but, she reapplied until she was accepted. Her perseverance paid off when she was finally able to study there at age 15.
In 1903 McCain worked as a draftswoman for a church architect, and with a firm which built homes and apartments. In 1909 her family moved to Portland where she proceeded to design several homes before moving back to California in 1914 and continuing to work on hundreds of projects until she disappears off the record in 1937.
