Early life and education
Born in 1957 in Dubuque, Iowa. Oldest of four daughters of Terry F. and Marilee K. Schwennsen. Graduate of Dubuque Senior High School in 1974. Received a BA in Architecture, with Distinction, in 1978 and an M.Arch. in 1980, both from Iowa State University, Ames, IA.
Career in Architecture
Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, served as the second woman president of the AIA in 2006. She is the Associate Dean for Academic Programs of the College of Design at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and a Professor of Architecture. As the Associate Dean she works closely with all of the departments of the college on issues related to curriculum, student recruitment and retention, budgeting, and strategic planning. Her scholarship focuses on the evolution of the profession, and the relationship between practice and education, and has been presented and published internationally. Prior to returning to her alma mater, (BA, 1978; M.Arch., 1980), to teach design and professional practice, she practiced for ten years in professionally critical areas, including office and project management, marketing, and design.
