Biography

Ilana Judah (Intl Assoc. AIA, OAQ, LEED AP BD+C) has over 15 years experience as a senior architect leading teams and developing solutions for projects of various scales and typologies. Her role at FXFOWLE is to further advance knowledge and implementation of environmentally-responsible design.

Ilana meets with design teams to develop comprehensive sustainable goals and innovative strategies, including meeting the requirements of LEED and other metrics. Her involvement begins during the initial design charrette as facilitation, engaging the team to develop a project’s unique sustainable approach. She remains a resource to each project team as a design progresses through construction, conducting research and coordinating green initiatives. Ilana has guided implementation of sustainable strategies on projects such as the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which will have one of the largest publicly funded green roofs in the country, and the Housatonic River Museum in Pittsfield, MA, originally designed to be the first net-zero building in the Northeast.

Ilana’s current assignments include a new 450,000 square-foot Business School for Columbia University; the National Center for Palliative Care Innovation at HealthCare Chaplaincy, a new 100-Unit Assisted Living Residential Building in lower Manhattan vying for LEED Platinum; and the West Village Residences, a 650,000 square foot development that creatively revitalizes a historic institutional campus into a new residential development integrated into the fabric of Greenwich Village; the project expects to achieve LEED-ND Gold. For Tulane University, Ilana led a sustainability study for Richardson Memorial Hall which will serve as a demonstration project and a nexus for the University’s Sustainable Strategies Initiative.

Ilana leads FXFOWLE’s in-house sustainability workgroup Team Green, which researches and disseminates information on the latest advancements in environmentally responsible architecture. Ilana organizes educational opportunities for staff that increase sustainable design knowledge and awareness about sustainability. She led implementation of the firm’s use of environmental building performance modeling software and is responsible for staff LEED accreditation amongst employees, and has been instrumental in increasing the number of LEED APs and GAs to over 80% of the firm’s professional staff.

Ilana participated on Mayor Bloomberg’s New York City Green Codes Task Force on the Climate Change Adaptation Committee. She is Co-Chair of the AIA NY Committee on the Environment (COTE), and a founding member of ASHRAE’s New York Sustainability Committee. Ilana is an active member of the New York Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and a former executive board member of the Canada Green Building Council, Quebec Chapter. She has served as a visiting instructor at Cornell University’s School of Art, Architecture and Planning, a guest lecturer at Columbia and NYU, and a visiting critic at McGill University. She is a frequent speaker at industry conferences such as GreenBuild and Living Futures.
